The continuing intent of the effort is to access and raise the standards for building on Staten Island and to continue a program of achievement and discourse for architecture that previously did not exist. The past decades have seen tremendous development on Staten Island, but this has occurred outside of the evaluation and consideration of a professional organization unconnected to purely financial concerns. The awards committee has established the awards ceremony as a yearly competition that will attract national attention and evaluation. Licensed Architects who have designed work for Staten Island or Island Architects who have designed work elsewhere in the world are included in categories of evaluation.
A body of four (4) jurors gathered at Ruddy and Dean Restaurant on February 19, 2003 to judge the entries submitted and select winning projects. The jurors were:
• Robert P. Bentson - Mr. Bentson is owner/partner of the Allen C. Bentson Agency, Inc., Staten Island
• Evan Douglis - Mr. Douglis is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Columbia University GSAP and is a Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute and Cooper Union
• Laurie Hawkinson - Ms. Hawkinson is a Principal in Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects, Manhattan, a leading national design firm and is a Professor of Architecture at the Columbia University GSAP.
• Frances X. Paulo Huber - Mrs. Paulo Huber is the President and CEO of the Staten Island Botanical Garden at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island.
The jurors acted completely independently and judged each project on its own merits. The jury was instructed to choose winning projects based on excellence of design and presentation and was free to award as many or as few projects as they deemed worthy. Projects were submitted in the following categories: Architecture, Interior Architecture, Project (unbuilt works), Adaptive Re-Use, Preservation/Restoration and Landscape Architecture, as well as a newly added category - Residential 1 and 2 Family.
The winning projects were announced at the Awards Presentation Luncheon to held Wednesday, May 21st, 2003 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Staten Island.
